Alcohol and Drug Problems

Attorneys experience problematic drinking that is hazardous, harmful, or otherwise consistent with alcohol use disorders at much higher rate than other professional populations. Alcoholism is a primary, progressive, and if left untreated, often fatal disease.  Alcohol abuse leading to dependence may be described alternatively as chemical dependency. Attorneys also use other substances at higher rates than the general population.  The following as a definition of chemical dependency that can be used as a guide in assessing any substance use, whether legal, illicit, or prescribed.
